The BBC didn't name it. The term has no roots whatsoever outside India itself
but is patterned on Tollywood, the name adopted by West Bengali film
makers in the 1930s. It is in no way associated with 'slave' mentality. In fact,
quite the opposite, "anything you can do, we can do better".
Indeed.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bollywood

There is also the nickname "Nollywood" for the Nigerian film industry.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nollywood

The use of that term is controversial in Nigeria:

Some stakeholders have constantly expressed their disagreement over
the term; giving reasons such as the fact that term was coined by a
foreigner, as such another form of Imperialism. It has also been
argued that the term is an imitation of what was already in
existence (Hollywood and Bollywood) rather than an identity in
itself, that is original and uniquely African.

but:
Those who defend the use of the term, argue that it is a form of
resistance to the very cultural and media imperialism to which its
critics attribute its origins, arguing that the term Nollywood
represents Nigerians making movies of their own, in their own style
- for Nigerians, by Nigerians (rather than simply consuming and
importing mostly Hollywood content like many developing countries
do).

A good initiative. Indian dancing and music are reduced to Bollywood, as if nothing else existed. Westerners should know that so-called Bollywood is nothing but a crass commercial process. Once upon a time it produced great dancing and music, but those days are long gone.

No. Westerners should be left to make their own minds up as the
films are increasingly available here and there have been a number
of cross-pollination projects with British and American studios.
We are now sufficiently familiar with Bollywood in the UK to have
seen a number of TV ads employing the memes.

The "--llywood" naming scheme is of foreign origin with
respect to Bharat:

Excerpt:

In 1853, one adobe hut stood in Nopalera (Nopal field),
named for the Mexican Nopal cactus indigenous to the area.
By 1870, an agricultural community flourished. The area was
known as the Cahuenga Valley, after the pass in the Santa
Monica Mountains immediately to the north.

According to the diary of H. J. Whitley, also known as the
"Father of Hollywood", on his honeymoon in 1886 he stood at
the top of the hill looking out over the valley. Along came
a Chinese man in a wagon carrying wood. The man got out of
the wagon and bowed. The Chinese man was asked what he was
doing and replied, "I holly-wood," meaning 'hauling wood.'
H. J. Whitley had an epiphany and decided to name his new
town Hollywood. "Holly" would represent England and "wood"
would represent his Scottish heritage. Whitley had already
started over 100 towns across the western United
States.[6][7]

Cinema itself is of foreign origin wrt India. It was used upto say the 1980s to show the best of Indian music, dancing, manners, traditions etc. by Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, etc. films. With such demeaning descriptions as Bollywood and Tollywood the regional and Hindi cultures are reduced to irrelevance, and supplanted by commercial muck (spasmodic jerking passes for dancing these days, and the less said about the songs the better) aping the West. Cultural standards can only improve when these *wood labels are removed.

Don't be absurd. The whole Indian film industry isn't suddenly
going to stop making commercially successful films and adopt
whatever it is you imagine to be culturally acceptable standards
just because of a change of name. Studios make what sells or
they make nothing at all. The harsh financial reality isn't going
to dissolve overnight just because the film industry gets a new
title like "Cultural Filmings of Mumbai for Make Benefit Glorious
Nation of India".

Not suddenly, true. Words do matter when identity and thus direction issues are concerned. Getting rid of the *wood labels and replacing them with proper terms like Bengali films, Hindi films, etc. will - in time - give precedence to the regional culture and language as opposed to the grovelling tailist *wood attitudes fostered by inferiority cultivation.

Lenin's term?

"He first used tailism (/khvostism/) to describe the 'Economists', those
who argued that the communist party should not take the lead in a
revolutionary situation, but should allow economic events – crises,
strikes, unrest – to unfold on their own. The party would then pick up
on the tail of these events."

https://stalinsmoustache.org/2011/02/17/tailism-a-resurrected-word-for-our-time/

The author (apparently an admirer of Stalin) goes on to apply "tailist"
to academics who do unoriginal work whether or not they give credit to
the originators.

Tailism was big in the political sphere of India in the late 60s-70s under Indira Gandhi, for it meant that the Left was turning to the Centre while the Centre was adopting Leftist populism. The CPI thus tailed the Congress, while in revulsion the CPI(Marxists) pursued a sterner ideological line, which was not stern enough for the CPI(Marxist-Leninists) who loved Mao dearly.

I remember debating with my friends, in those days, what was better - to be the tail of a lion or the eye of a fly.

As for Indira Gandhi, she gave up ideology (whatever that word meant to her) for dynastic values, and this trend has only accelerated since. In other words, non-tailism is autocracy/dynasty.

Tailism, in the political sense, now means corruption from the bribery of the elected representatives to join the party in power.

In the Bollywood context, tailism is corruption of a similar nature but in the cultural sense.

hardly comes off well in that bleak tale of generations of failure,

Since whatever emotions PTD may have are of the negative dismissive kind (else why should he be favoured in that den of inhospitable snobs!) it is impossible for him to find any of the deep human qualities portrayed in the works of Satyajit Ray.

Apart from Ray, there are many other prominent Bengali film personalities. Bengali films have their own standing in India - and Ray falls within a certain category. His films were not designed to be popular in the Hindi film sense. But they have had an impact upon the world, so even PTD has heard of them.

*wood labelling in the Indian context is Macaulayite trickery; promoted by the racist western moneybags on one hand, and the in-power reverse-racist brown-nosing Indian quislings on the other hand; to continue with their post-colonial inferiority cultivation tactics.

It's simply a term which indicates 'movie-making area'. The city of
Wellington in New Zealand is often nicknamed "Wellywood" due to movies
like 'Lord of the Rings' and being the main location for the visual
effects company Weta. The west area of Auckland city is also nicknamed
"Westiewood" due to many TV shows and movies being made there
(including at one stage the 'Power Rangers' stuff)

If some numbnut wants to whine about a name (and obviously has nothing
better to do) and doesn't want India to be known as a movie-making
country, then that's fine with me ... they're all utter crap movies
anyway.

known as the Cahuenga Valley, after the pass in the Santa

It was used
upto say the 1980s to show the best of Indian music,
dancing, manners, traditions etc. by Hindi, Bengali, Tamil,
etc. films. With such demeaning descriptions as Bollywood
and Tollywood the regional and Hindi cultures are reduced
to irrelevance, and supplanted by commercial muck
(spasmodic jerking passes for dancing these days, and the
less said about the songs the better) aping the West.
Cultural standards can only improve when these *wood labels
are removed.
Filmmaker Subhash Ghai's objection to the "Bollywood"
moniker is shared by many in Mumbai. My own relatives and
friends in the Bharatiya movie industry resent the term to
the extent that they avoid "Hollywood" to refer to the one
in Los Angeles. The colonial cloud will lift eventually, if
not in our lifetime.
Ooh, get you! I bet all those LA studios are devastated!

Selling Gollywog (or Golliwogg) dolls is also "illegal", according to
the Politcally Correct whiners.

Only in the totalitarian EU. You can buy and sell them
in the USA without the slightest restriction - that "free
speech"/"free thought" thing euros apparently despise.

Of course if your boss is an Indian ex-pat, you might
get fired ...........

Not just the EU that has problems with Gollywog dolls been sold.
There's idiots here in New Zealand that have had them basically banned,
apart from one store owner (maybe others) who refuses to bow down to
the Politically Correct whiners.

Waiheke Island gift shop owner won't stop selling golliwog dolls
