The word for phobia of long words is a long word ...
Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia
... makes it tough for those with the phobia to describe their condition.
Ludicrous...breaking down the contrived word into its constituent parts
yields "horse-river-monster-one-and-a-half-foot-fear"...it not only uses
unnecessary figures of speech to convey bigness, but makes no reference
at all to words....r

How about the shorter alternative term?
Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia is also known as Sesquipedalophobia.

What's ludicrous about that? If I saw a horse and a river monster with
one and a half feet coming towards me... well, I don't know about you,
pal, but *I'd* be scared.

I'd be scared too, within reason, but not of what they were saying....r

Do you think maybe it is a reverse translation of the Mandarin word for
phobia of long words? Chinese characters have been known to be combined
in some odd ways to /sound/ like western words.

Once in London's Chinatown I paid a pavement artist to write my name in
Chinese characters on a long sheet of paper with a brush-and-pen. He
asked me to spell my name in Latin characters and he combined several
Chinese characters which together sounded like my name (so I was told).
The component characters were a rare and surreal combination of words
which escape me now.
