Post by Snidelywhen was the last freezing weather in the Orlando area?
Out here, we usually only hear about icy Florida when an orange crop is
destroyed, or O-rings get stiff.
"Freezing weather" is relative term in Orlando. I went out an hour or
so ago and wore a flannel shirt and a hoodie. The outside
temperature was about 60° F (15.5° C) with no wind to speak of.
If the temperature's in the 50s, I might say it's "freezing out
there", but my grandsons will be out in shorts and a tee shirt.
The TV news today contains "freeze warnings" for the area. A "freeze
warning" means the temperature may dip into the low 30s during the
night, and the brief time it will actually be near 32°, coupled with
the "wind chill factor" means people may want to cover outside plants.
(We drape sheets over outside plants overnight so the chill won't kill
them.)
When we moved to Florida, Orlando was surrounded by orange groves.
The "Big Freeze of 1985" destroyed most of the groves. Most of the
grove owners sold to developers rather than starting over. What were
acres of orange trees are now subdivisions.
The lowest recorded temperature in Orlando was -2° F in 1899, but in
the 50 years I've now lived in Florida it's been below the actual
freezing point several times. I've seen snow in my yard, but it
melted immediately. It's not unknown to have frost on the car's
windshield in the morning, but it's rare.
The lowest temperature in Orlando in 2024 was 38° F on January 21st.
