What does it mean "to steal oneself"?
Could it have been "to steel oneself"? See 2a and especially 2b, below.

What does it mean "to steal oneself"?
If this is from some book on the history of slavery, it means to
escape. I think it more likely that you misspelt "to steel oneself."

There's to "steal oneself away", i.e. to sneak out while no one is looking.
