Hello:

I wonder what an "E.W.D. land barge" is.

-----
From the street outside came the sound of a dumpster being emptied into
an E.W.D. land barge.

D.F. Wallace, Infinite Jest, p. 25
------

Could it be something like:

provided with an Early Warning Device, to be used when moving about?
:-))

Thanks.

I'm going 'waste department' for the 'W.D'... E could be
'environmental'... or are we in a city that starts with letter E?

Seems a good guess.

Thank you all.

I'd guess that a land barge has a roughly similar shape to a
river barge, and moves on wheels.

E.W.D. could be the name of the organisation (local government
or private) which operated one or more land barges for
trash/waste collection.

E.W.D. might be something like Ernestville Waste Disposal.

I'm reminder of a visit to the Gold Coast, West Africa, in the
mid-1950s. There were vehicles on the roads marked simply PWD,
my initials. In that case PWD stood for Public Works Department,
a goverment department..

You should have brought one of those back with you. Much more
upmarket (and cheaper) than a personalised number plate.

It would have been difficult to fit it on the plane to London
(Heathrow).

The plane was a Canadair DC-4M Argonaut operated by BOAC.
Details and picture of the DC-4 and lists of derivatives at:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Douglas_DC-4

The DC-4Mes that I travelled on were reliable, but my sisters
(high school age) had an interesting flight when 2 engines of
their plane failed over the Sahara. I have never flown in their
company.
