Post by Peter MoylanPost by Steve HayesPost by Susan Cohen"First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out
because I was not a Socialist. Then they came for the Trade
Unionists, and I did not speak out because I was not a Trade
Unionist. Then they came for the jews, and just like everybody else, I
did not speak out because I did not give a shit. Then they came for me
and there was no one left to speak for me.
- Martin Niemoller (1892 - 1984)
There are several variations of that quotation, and that one doesn't
First they came for the Communists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Communist
Then they came for the Socialists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Socialist
Then they came for the trade unionists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a trade unionist
Then they came for the Jews
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Jew
Then they came for me
And there was no one left
To speak out for me
That's just the Niemöller original, with the "Communist" part tacked on
to the beginning. Which, I agree, does improve the flow of it.
Neither of them is the Niemoller original, but the "Communist" part
certainly wasn't "tacked on". Historically, the Nazis did first go for
the Communists, then for the Sozis.
Niemoller made that point several times when he was on the
international speaking circuit, not always with the same form of
words. The examples given are digests of what he was in the habit of
saying, but when he said it, he usually began with the Communists.
And much the same thing happened in South Africa. When the National
Party came to power in 1948, they first went for the communists, and
the Suppression of Communism Act (Act 44 of 1950) was the result of
their efforts.
Niemoller toured South Africa at one point and spoke in several towns,
and most of his speeches included that point, but he didn't use
exactly the same wording on every occasion.
Post by Peter MoylanPost by Steve HayesBut what is the English usage question?
You won't get an answer to that. The fact that it was posted to a couple
of crank groups suggest to me that the OP probably doesn't even read AUE.
