Having in the last few days discovered scripts to the above-mentioned
favourites from my youth (why do people not like postings that
incorporate the header line in this group?):

"The Goons"
"I'm Sorry I'll Read that Again"

...and found them...

Hilarious
Terrible

...respectively, I was even more astonished to find recordings of the
actual shows on BBC7:

Requires RealPlayer, a free download from that page.

It's not a problem if the relevant words from the header are repeated
in the body of the message. What doesn't work is to put in the header
something like "The Goons" and then, in the message body, write only
"are very dated, aren't they? What does everyone think?" Newsreaders
vary as to how and where the header is displayed, and in any case the
question is harder to read if the first half if it is in one place and
the second half in another. That's all.

Moreover, if you come in half-way through, you don't even see the full
title. Many threads are displayed on my computer just as "Re..." -
something I tried to explain to Mr C when he was complaining about lack
of correspondence between subject title and content.

Yup, we download the vintage stuff from Beeb7 to CD for long car
journeys, along with 'Round the Horne', old 'I'm sorry I haven't a
clues', Hancock...

I'm quite fond of ISIRTA and it can be intriguing listening to various
pre-pythons and Goodies.

The Goons I'm sorry to say makes me cringe - and I'd so like to enjoy
it. Sadly nobody told Spike that WW2 finished in 1945.

I have an ill-formed theory that each decade throws up one, and only
one supreme new radio comedy. 50s - Goons; 60s - Round The Horne;
70s - ISIRTA; 80s - Radio Active. I'm not sure about the 90s yet.

Matti and I are both avid radio collectors and have been archiving
our various favourites since BBC7 started. Praise be to Tivo.

Most people would slot the overexposed HG2G round here somewhere. I'd
put in a vote for the splendid and occasionally heard on BBC7 Burkiss
Way.

Dead Ringers? The Now Show?

Are you still enjoying la belle Med?

Yes, I have been collecting the Burkiss Way, which was something of
an influence on later comedies, I understand. HHG is a favourite of
mine, but I wouldn't call it a "comedy" - it's more of a drama
series. None of the other series I suggested above have continuing
stories, but they do all have consistent characters.

Dead Ringers? The Now Show?
I got a little tired of Dead Ringers after about three series, and
although I thoroughly enjoy The Now Show, I'm not sure I will want to
listen to it in 30 years time.

Are you still enjoying la belle Med?
Nope, we are now home, having driven from Fitou to Paris yesterday
and then from Paris to Warrington today. It is an utter delight to
drive up the middle of France along the A75, especially when compared
with the M25 and M6, and makes the case for cruise control which is
rarely of any use over here - lock the speed to 85 and sit back and
watch the scenery go by.

We crossed Le Viaduc in both directions - it's astonishingly long. I
wish I'd had time to go down into Millau as the bridge completely
dominates the town and I'd like to have seen it from below.
